Etymology: Before it described computer security, "firewall" was a building term: a wall of brick or stone built to stop a fire spreading from one part of a structure to another. The computing sense came later and took the same idea into networks, where a barrier sits between a private system and the outside world to block unauthorized traffic. The word has a second, unexpected life in cars. On many simpler vehicles, the firewall is the metal partition that stops the throttle controls from moving further forward, so pressing the accelerator or throttle lever all the way to that limit gave the maximum engine output. From this came the verb sense meaning to use maximum power or acceleration. Its politics sense is a loan translation of German "Brandmauer," which shares the same fire-and-wall construction. The verb "firewalled" here means secured against unauthorized access by a firewall.
