Etymology: "Finaunce" is an obsolete spelling of "finance," and its story starts with an ending. In Middle English, the word meant "ending" around 1400, drawn from Old French "fin," itself from Latin "fīnis," meaning end or boundary. The connection runs through a verb, "finer," meaning to pay a ransom or settle a debt, so a payment was a way of bringing a matter to a close. French influence shaped the word's meaning in English. In the mid 15th century it came to mean a ransom, and by the late 15th century it had acquired the sense of taxation. The modern idea of managing money did not appear until around 1770.
