Etymology: "Financer" is a plain formation: the noun "finance" with the agentive suffix "-er" added, meaning one who finances, or one who supplies money for an enterprise. The suffix has a long pedigree of its own. It descends from a Proto-Indo-European root and passed through Latin "-arius", which marked a person connected with a trade or role, before reaching Old English as "-ere", the ancestor of modern "-er". The suffix did not come into English alone in the case of "financer". It arrived in Middle English as "-er" and was later attached to "finance", a word borrowed from Old French "finance", meaning payment or settlement of a debt. That French word goes back to Latin roots tied to finishing or settling an obligation, so the one who "financer" was originally the person who handled such settlements.
