Etymology: "Fealdest" is the superlative form of "foul," the Old English adjective "fūl," meaning rotten, dirty, or ugly. Its superlative, "fūlest," would be the usual later form, but the older Old English form "fealdest" (from "fealdan" as a variant spelling of "fūl" with the same root sense) is attested in some early texts. This superlative is a form of the ancient adjective rather than a separate word, and it did not survive into Modern English, which uses "foulest" instead.
