Etymology: Each March, the streets of Valencia fill with towering figures of papier-mâché and wood, some several storeys high. The festival honours Saint Joseph, patron saint of carpenters, and it grew out of the spring custom of craftsmen burning their wooden scraps and workshop props to clear out the old and make way for the new. On the final night, the monuments are set alight, often accompanied by fireworks. The name is likely tied to that tradition. The Valencian singular, "falla", is thought to descend from Latin "facula", a little torch, which suits the bonfires. The Spanish "falla", meaning a fault or defect, is a separate word, related to the verb "fallar", to fail, and it shares only its spelling with the festival term.
