Etymology: The verb "explore" has a surprising origin in the sound of a hunting cry. Latin "explōrāre" was, according to one account, a hunters' term meaning "to set up a loud cry," built from "ex-" ("out") and "plōrāre" ("to cry"). The idea was apparently of making a noise to flush out game or to find the quarry's location, and the sense of searching out gradually broadened into ordinary investigation. The word passed into English through Middle French "explorer," and it displaced the native Old English "rāsian," which had meant something close to "to rush" or "to attack." Some scholars instead connect the second element to "pluere" ("to flow"), giving the sense "to make to flow," but the cry explanation is the one most often given.
