Exploitor

Part of speech: noun

Definitions

  1. A person who uses others or resources selfishly for personal gain, often with little regard for their welfare or rights
  2. Someone who takes advantage of people or situations in an unjust or unethical manner to benefit themselves
  3. An individual who extracts value from others or from circumstances through manipulation, coercion, or unfair practices

Etymology: The noun "exploit" originally meant a deed or achievement, not the selfish use of someone or something. It comes from Old French "esploit," meaning success or accomplishment, which descends from Latin "explicitum," the neuter past participle of "explicare," "to unfold." The sense seems to be that a deed unfolds into being. The idea of using someone for gain came later, when the verb "exploit" was used for turning a resource or a person to one's own profit. "Exploitor" is an older spelling of the agent noun for someone who exploits. It uses the Latin-style "-or" ending, as in "executor" and "tutor," while the now-standard "exploiter" adds the English "-er" suffix. The spelling has largely fallen out of use, and "exploiter" is the form used today.
