Etymology: "Exclusivize" is simply "exclusive" with the verb-forming suffix "-ize" added, the same suffix found in words like "modernize" and "computerize." The base adjective "exclusive" comes from Latin "exclusivus," from "excludere," meaning "to shut out," built from "ex-" (out) and "claudere" (to close). That literal sense of shutting something out remains at the heart of the verb: to exclusivize something is to close it off so that others are kept out. The suffix "-ize" comes from Greek "-izein," which Latin borrowed as "-izare" and which English adopted in large numbers, so that it can now be attached to almost any adjective to form a verb meaning "to make or treat as." Taken together, "exclusivize" means to make something exclusive, turning an open thing into one reserved for a select few.
