Etymology: "Evades" is the third-person singular present form of "evade", so it takes its history from that verb. "Evade" came into English from Middle French "évader", which in turn comes from Latin "ēvādō", meaning "to pass or go over; flee". That Latin verb was built from "ē", "out of, from", and "vādō", "to go; walk", the same base that gives English "wade". The sense of getting away from something by moving out of its path, rather than going over it, is written into the parts of the word.
