Etymology: "Ethnogeographical" is a straightforward compound: "ethno-" joined to "geographical." The prefix "ethno-" comes from Greek "ethnos," meaning "nation," "people," or "race," and it is used in English to mark a connection with ethnic groups or ethnology. "Geographical" is itself an adjective built on Greek "geographia," a combination of "ge" (earth) and "graphein" (to write, describe), so the word literally joins the study of peoples with the description of the earth. The combination follows the familiar pattern of paired terms such as "ethnobotany" and "ethnomusicology," where "ethno-" tells you the field studies human groups and the second element names the lens applied to them. Here the lens is geography, so the word describes research into how ethnic communities are spread across the land and how place and environment shape their identities and contacts with one another.
