Etymology: "Ethiopians" is the plural of "Ethiopian," which comes from Greek "Aithiops," literally "burnt-face," from "aithein" (to burn) and "ops" (face). The Greeks used the name for dark-skinned peoples of the south and east, not for one nation, and Homer already speaks of the Aithiopes as a distant people at the edge of the known world. The name reached English through Latin "Aethiops," and it was later applied to the people and country we now call Ethiopia.
