Etymology: "Escarbuncle" is a variant of "carbuncle," and its spelling records a shift in how the word was pronounced and written. It came into English from Old French "escharboncle," which itself descends from Latin "carbunculus," meaning "little coal" or "small ember." The Latin name was a diminutive of "carbo," "coal," and it was applied to the inflamed, glowing lumps on the skin, which were imagined as burning like embers. The modern French form "escaboucle" preserves the same root, and the English word carries the earlier French spelling with its extra "s" and "r." Over time the "carbuncle" spelling won out in English, while "escarbuncle" survived as an older variant. The word once also referred to a glowing red gemstone, most likely a garnet, because of the same ember-like colour.
