Escadre

Part of speech: noun

Definitions

  1. A naval term referring to a group of warships organized for a specific purpose or mission
  2. This word denotes a fleet of ships that operate together, often under a single command
  3. It describes a tactical formation of vessels typically employed in military operations at sea

Etymology: The word's roots are in geometry. Italian "squadra" meant a square, both the shape and the carpenter's tool, and it came from Late Latin "exquadrare," "to square up," built on "quadra," a square. Soldiers drawn up in a rectangular block were called a "squadra," and the word came to mean any organized body of armed men. In French, the form "escadre" was applied to a division of warships, and that naval sense is the one English uses today. The shape is gone, but the idea of a fixed, organized formation remains.
