The word passed into Latin as "Epiphanēs," a borrowed form that kept its Greek shape, and English took it over from there. Its most famous bearer was Antiochus IV Epiphanes, a second-century BCE Seleucid king who styled himself "god manifest" on his coins and in his titles, a claim that made the epithet a deliberate statement of divinity rather than mere praise.
