Etymology: The word "eparchein" is the Greek verb meaning "to rule over" or "to govern," built from "epi" ("over, upon") and "archein" ("to rule, to lead, to begin"). From the same verb came "eparchia," a noun for a province or governed district, and it is that noun that English borrowed in its modern form, "eparchy," for a district under a bishop or metropolitan in Eastern Orthodox churches. The root "archein" also gave Greek and English a whole family of words for power and beginnings, including "archon," a ruler or magistrate, and the "-archy" of "monarchy" and "hierarchy." Ancient Greek administrators spoke of provinces through the same vocabulary of command, so a district and the act of governing it shared one word.
