Etymology: "Envisioned" is the past tense and past participle of "envision," which is formed by adding the prefix "en-" to "vision." The base word traces back to Latin "visionem," meaning a thing or sight seen, which itself grows out of the Latin verb for seeing. English already had "vision" in the sense of something seen, whether a physical sight or a dream-like apparition, so "envision" built on that stock of meaning. The prefix "en-" is an old and productive one, meaning roughly "to put into" or "to bring into a state." Attaching it to "vision" gave the sense of putting a sight into the mind, so to envision something is to bring it into view inwardly. The verb took on the mental sense that dominates today, as in picturing a plan or future that does not yet exist.
