Etymology: Latin speakers formed "enumerare" by joining "e-", a form of "ex-" meaning "out," to "numerare," "to count." The root is "numerus," "number," so the word literally meant "to count out." The Latin verb was used for counting out money, paying coin by coin, and that sense of tallying each piece in turn carried into the English meaning. The same root gives English "number," "numeral," and "numerous," so "enumerate" belongs to the same family as the everyday words for counting.

Synonyms: enumerate, list, count, itemize, number
