Etymology: "Enrolled" is the past tense and past participle of "enrol," a verb whose core idea is writing a name into a roll, or formal list. The "roll" in question is the Latin "rotulus," a little scroll, which came into English through Old French "rolle" and gave us "roll" itself. To enrol someone was literally to put their name on the scroll, so the modern sense of being formally admitted to a school, army, or membership list is the original image still in use. The spelling is the other part of the story. Current British usage keeps "enrol," while American English usually writes "enroll," with the double letter that also appears in "install" and "fulfill" in many American forms. Both spellings are standard, and the difference is simply a matter of regional convention rather than meaning.
