Etymology: "Engross" began as a legal and commercial term. It came into English from Anglo-French "engrosser", from Old French "en gros", meaning "in bulk" or "in large". A scribe who engrossed a document wrote out its final copy in a large, formal hand, and dealers who engrossed goods bought them up wholesale, monopolizing the supply. The sense of having one's attention wholly filled grew from that image of taking up all the available space. "Engrossed" describes a mind occupied entirely by one thing, and "engrossedly" is the rare adverb formed by adding "-ly" to that participle, describing an action done in such full absorption.
