Etymology: "Encored" is simply the past tense and past participle of "encore," so the story belongs to the verb it comes from. That verb was borrowed from French, where "encore" meant "more" or "again," and English used it in that same sense for a time, as a call for something additional. Audiences would shout it to ask a performer to repeat or continue, which is how a French adverb of repetition became a stage cry. Over time the call was turned into a verb, so a performer who gives an extra number is said to be "encored" when the crowd demands it.
