Etymology: "Encoded" is the past tense and past participle of "encode," formed from the prefix en- (from Latin "in," meaning "into") and "code." The base comes through Old French "code" from Latin "codex," which traces back to "caudex," a word for a tree trunk or block of wood. The Latin sense shifted as it travelled. A "codex" came to mean a set of writing tablets bound together, and later a book, which is why the word still carries the idea of an organised body of written material. "Encode" thus means to put information into an organised system of symbols.
