Etymology: The name comes from a television camera part. The image orthicon, an early camera tube, was nicknamed "Immy" by people in the industry. When the television academy needed a name for its award, it chose a feminine version of that nickname, "Emmy," which gave the trophy a name to match its statuette, a winged woman holding an atom. The plural "emmys" is simply the regular English plural of "Emmy," used when referring to several of the awards or to the awards in general. Its origin is the same camera nickname, with the plural ending added.
