Embeddables
Part of speech: noun, adjective
Definitions
- Things capable of being inserted or integrated into another object or system, such as media or content that can be placed within webpages or applications
- Items or elements designed to be incorporated seamlessly within a larger structure or interface, often allowing interactive or connected features to be included
- Components suitable for embedding inside electronic devices, documents, or digital environments to provide additional functionality or information without standing alone
Etymology: The verb "embed" joins "em-", a variant of "en-" meaning "in," to "bed," in its old sense of a layer or stratum. To embed something was to set it firmly within a surrounding mass, as a fossil is embedded in rock. The suffix "-able" comes from Latin "-abilis" by way of Old French and marks something that can be acted upon, so an embeddable thing is one that can be set inside something else. The modern sense comes from software and web design, where it describes components built to sit inside another program or page without disturbing it. "Embeddables" is the plural noun for such components, the pieces a developer places inside a larger interface to add features like video players, maps or social feeds.
