Etymology: The verb "emailed" is the simple past and past participle of "email", and it was formed on the noun. The noun is an abbreviation of "electronic mail", first attested in the 1970s. English speakers then turned it into a verb by analogy with "mail" in the sense "to send through the mail", so the verb arrived after the noun had already become familiar. The result is a word whose ancestry splits in two. The "mail" half is the plain English word for postal delivery, a term that traces back through Middle English and Anglo-Norman to a Frankish root, "malha", meaning a bag or wallet. The "e" half is the prefix from "electronic", which goes back to Ancient Greek "ḗlektron", meaning amber. Ancient Greeks knew that rubbed amber attracted light objects, which is why their word for amber eventually gave English "electric" and "electron".
