Electrotherapeutical

Etymology: Its first part comes from a word for amber. The ancient Greek "elektron" named this golden fossil resin, and rubbing it made it attract light objects, which is why the Greeks observed static. The English physician William Gilbert later coined the Latin "electricus" for this attraction, and the modern "electro-" prefix descends from that amber-based root. The second half, "therapeutical," comes from the Greek "therapeutikos," meaning "attending" or "healing," from "therapeuein," "to serve" or "to care for." The original sense was closer to service than cure. The "-al" suffix makes it an adjective. The whole word is a modern compound that joins the electrical prefix to this older healing term.
