Etymology: "Electropump" is a plain compound: the combining form "electro-", from "electricity" and ultimately from Greek "ēlektron" (amber, which rubbed with fur gave off a static charge), joined to "pump". Its meaning is transparent: a pump driven by electric power rather than by hand, steam, or a combustion engine. The word's interest lies in its construction rather than any surprising history. The "electro-" element became a productive prefix in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, when electricity was being applied to ever more machines, so that coinages like "electromotor" and "electrolyte" appeared alongside it.
