Etymology: Inflected form: "elapsed" is the past tense and past participle of "elapse", so its history is that of the verb. "Elapse" entered English from Middle French "elapser", which came from Latin "elapsus", the past participle of "elabi", meaning "to slip away" or "glide away". The Latin verb is built from "e-", a form of "ex-" meaning "out", and "labi", "to slide or fall", so the original image is of something sliding out of sight. That physical sense of gliding off is what lies behind the modern idea of time quietly passing.
