Etymology: The name describes a plant that was once grown for its pale fruit rather than the dark purple one familiar today. The earliest cultivated varieties produced small, white, egg-shaped fruits, and English speakers called the plant "egg plant" because of that appearance. The purple-skinned types came later, and the name stuck even as the colour changed. The same logic appears across Europe. Dutch and Afrikaans use "eierplant", German has "Eierpflanze", and Swedish has "äggplanta", all meaning roughly "egg plant". Icelandic goes a step further with "eggaldin", literally "egg-fruit", and Afrikaans offers "eiervrug" with the same sense. Each language reached for the egg as the most obvious comparison for a fruit of that shape.
