Etymology: "Effleurage" is a French word, borrowed into English, and its root is a gardening image. "Effleurer" combines "é-" (out, away) with "fleur" (flower), so the literal sense is to remove the flowers or bloom from something. From there it came to mean touching something so lightly that the surface is barely disturbed, like a hand brushing across petals without bruising them. That lightness is what the massage term keeps. In massage, the technique is a series of long, gentle strokes over the skin, usually with the palms, used to warm the tissue and prepare the body for deeper work. The word "effleuraging" is simply the -ing form of the verb, describing the act of performing that stroke.
