Etymology: The root is a Latin verb, "edere," meaning to bring forth or put out. It combines "e," meaning out, with "dare," to give. An "editor" was originally someone who got a text ready and sent it into the world, and the same root gives us "edition." "Editorial" began as an adjective describing that work of preparing material for publication. Its newspaper sense grew from the idea that the editor, rather than a reporter, speaks for the publication. Those articles typically run without a byline, so they carry the paper's own voice.
