Etymology: "Easternizes" is the third-person singular form of "easternize," which takes "eastern" and adds the suffix "-ize," a common verb-forming ending that comes from Greek through Latin and French and means roughly "to make or become like." So the verb's basic recipe is simple: take a directional adjective and turn it into an action. The adjective "eastern" is itself an old word in English, built on the same root as "east." The suffix does the rest of the work, letting speakers describe a process of making something conform to the East, whether that means a city's architecture, a household's food, or a government's policies. The pattern is productive, so it can be applied to almost any adjective, which is why "westernize" and "modernize" follow the same model. Because the verb describes influence flowing in a particular direction, it often carries an observer's viewpoint: the speaker is describing change from outside, as seen from a place that is not the East. The word is therefore as much about the perspective of the speaker as about the East itself.
