Etymology: Earnings is an inflected form: the plural of "earning," which in turn comes from the verb "earn." Its ending is the ordinary English plural "-s," which descends from the Old English "-as" and reaches back through Proto-Germanic "-ōz" to much older Indo-European plural endings. So the word is simply the plural of "earning," and the sense "income from work" arose as the plural took on a meaning that the singular did not carry on its own.
