Dystrophias

Part of speech: noun

Definitions

  1. A group of disorders characterized by abnormal growth or development of tissues and organs, often affecting muscle or connective tissue
  2. Conditions that involve the progressive degeneration or dysfunction of various body systems, posing challenges to normal functioning
  3. Medical conditions resulting from impaired tissue growth, leading to a range of manifestations from mild to severe impairments in health and mobility

Etymology: "Dystrophias" is simply the plural of "dystrophia", the medical term for progressive degeneration of tissue, most familiar today in the phrase muscular dystrophies. The singular is a New Latin coinage built from Greek elements: "dys-", meaning bad, faulty or difficult, and "trophe", meaning nourishment or feeding. Put together, the root sense is faulty nourishment, which fits the way these conditions starve tissue of the proper supply of nutrition and gradually wear it away.
