Etymology: The "dutchie" in the cooking-pot sense is simply the Dutch word for a heavy iron pot, with the diminutive "-ie" added. Its name points to the Dutch origin of the cast-iron vessel, which campers and settlers carried with them, and the same word later gave a pastry and a joint their names. The sense that has traveled furthest is the cannabis one. One account holds that it comes from the Dutch Masters cigar, a brand whose hollowed-out wrappers were widely used to roll blunts, so a cannabis-filled cigar became a "dutchie." The other possibility is the reggae and dancehall song "Pass the Dutchie," itself built on the earlier "Pass the Kouchie," where "kouchie" names a pipe for smoking cannabis. Which of these lies behind the slang is unclear, and the two may have reinforced each other. The Caribbean pastry takes its name from the same shape-based logic: it is a square-cut, spiced confection, and the name is shared with the pot's square-bottomed form. Its meaning in that sense is the cooking-pot word used in a different setting.
