Dumpcart

Part of speech: noun

Definitions

  1. A small, often two-wheeled vehicle designed to carry and unload bulk materials easily, typically used in farming, construction, or gardening
  2. A cart equipped with a mechanism allowing it to tip and release its load, commonly employed for transporting soil, gravel, or refuse manually or by animal power
  3. A basic transport vehicle featuring a tilting body for dumping contents, frequently utilized in agricultural or industrial settings for moving loose substances

Etymology: A dump cart is a compound of two plain English words, and the surprise lies in the first one. "Dump" is itself an older word than its modern sense of a rubbish heap or to unload something heavy. It was used for tipping out and setting down a load, so the cart is named for the very action it performs: it lets its contents go in one tip. The "cart" half is the older, more familiar element, a two-wheeled or four-wheeled vehicle for carrying goods, usually pulled by animals. Put together, the words describe a cart built to unload itself by tipping, which is why it became the standard tool for moving soil, gravel and waste without anyone having to shovel the load out by hand.
