  3. Resembling the continuous, low-pitched humming noise produced by a sustained tone or a buzzing insect

Etymology: "Dronic" is "drone" with the adjective-forming suffix "-ic," which comes through Latin "-icus" from Greek "-ikos" and means "having the character of." Something dronic has the low, unvarying hum of a drone, the sound that stays on one note and wears on the ear. "Drone" itself has an older, unexpected sense. Its ancestor in Old English, "drān," meant a male bee, the one that does no foraging or stinging and only hums about the hive. The sound sense probably grew from that buzzing, though the exact path is uncertain. So the word for an idle insect became the word for the steady, monotonous noise it made.
