Etymology: "Dreamiest" is the superlative of "dreamy," so it inherits its whole history from that adjective. The base word "dream" goes back to Old English "drēam," which meant joy, music or revelry rather than the images we see asleep. The sense of a vision in sleep came later, and it was that dream-state meaning that gave rise to the adjective. "Dreamy" is formed simply from "dream" plus the suffix "-y," which turns a noun into an adjective meaning full of or characterized by the thing named. A dreamy thing is therefore one full of dream-like qualities: vague, hazy, or drifting. Its move from sleeping visions toward the sense of something lovely and imaginative is what allows "dreamiest" to mean the most imaginative and beautiful.
