Etymology: Latin "docere" meant "to teach," and its present participle "docens" gave English a word for a teacher. The "docent" in circulation today came into English through German, where "Dozent" named a university lecturer who taught without a formal professorship. English speakers first used it in that academic sense, and it remains the usual term in German-speaking universities. The museum guide sense is an American extension, applied to people who lead visitors through galleries and explain the collections. Its relative "doctor" comes from the same Latin root, though it arrived by a different route, as "doctor" is a direct borrowing of the Latin noun "doctor," meaning teacher. Both words preserve the older idea of someone whose job is instruction.
