Etymology: "Divulgates" is the third-person singular present form of "divulgate," a verb meaning to make private information public. It is an inflected form, so its history is that of the verb it belongs to. The verb "divulgate" was first recorded in English in 1530, and it has a close relative in "divulge," which took a different path to the same place. Both come from Latin "dīvulgāre," meaning "to make common or known to the public," built from "dis-" (apart, away) and "vulgāre" (to make common, from "vulgus," the common people). The root idea is therefore of spreading something out among the crowd until everyone knows it. Because the two words are doublets, English ended up with two versions of one Latin verb. "Divulge" is the form most readers meet today, while "divulgate" survives as the more formal and less common variant.
