Dissert

Part of speech: verb

Definitions

  1. To speak or write at considerable length about a topic, typically in a formal or learned manner
  2. To discourse extensively on a subject with detailed exposition or argumentation
  3. To expound upon a matter in a lengthy and thorough fashion, as if delivering a lecture or treatise

Etymology: Our word comes from Latin "dissertus," the past participle of "disserere," which joined "dis-" to "serere," meaning "to join, connect." A verb about talking, then, descends from a verb about joining things together, the same root that gives us "series." English also has "dissertate," which comes from the same Latin base by a separate route, so the two are doublets. French "disserter," meaning to discuss or hold forth on a subject, is a close relative of the English word.
