Disinfectingly
Part of speech: adverb
Definitions
- In a manner that cleanses surfaces or wounds by destroying harmful microorganisms to prevent infection or contamination
- Acting in a way that eliminates bacteria, viruses, or other pathogens from objects or environments to ensure sanitary conditions
- Conducted with the purpose of reducing or removing germs through chemical or physical means to maintain hygiene and safety
Etymology: Break the word into parts and the first is a reversal. The prefix "dis-" undoes an action, and "infect" comes from Latin "inficere," meaning "to dip in" or "to stain," which is literally putting something into a substance. To disinfect is to take that contamination back out. The adverb is built in layers. "Disinfect" is the verb, "disinfecting" its participle, and the suffix "-ly" turns the whole into a word describing how something is done. The sense of removing disease-causing organisms reflects a modern understanding of infection as caused by microscopic agents, not the older Latin idea of staining or tainting.
