Etymology: "Disgorged" is the past tense and past participle of "disgorge," a verb that entered English from Middle French "desgorger," meaning to pour out of the throat or gullet. The French word was built from "des-," a prefix signalling removal, and "gorge," meaning throat, which is also the source of the English "gorge" in its sense of a narrow ravine or a swallowing. The verb therefore began with a bodily image, a throat emptying its contents, and the sense of forcible expulsion from a confined space grew out of that physical root. The word kept its sense of rejecting or giving up something swallowed or held, and the literal idea of forcing material out of an enclosed place remains visible in it.
