Discorden
Part of speech: verb
Definitions
- An archaic verb meaning to be out of harmony with someone, or to fall into disagreement and quarrel
- Old form of a verb describing parties who fall into conflict, disagree, or fail to agree in opinion
- To be in dispute or at odds with another, a sense of the verb once used for quarrelling or disagreeing
Etymology: The Latin verb "discordare" meant to be out of tune or out of harmony. It was formed from "dis-", meaning apart, and "cor", meaning heart, so a quarrel was pictured as two hearts pulling in different directions. English kept that picture in the sense of falling out with someone. The verb most likely reached English through Old French, where a form like "descorder" carried the same sense of clashing or disagreeing. Its noun relative, "discord", came from the Latin "discordia", and the two share the same root.
