Etymology: "Disappears" is the third-person singular form of "disappear," so its history belongs to that verb. Middle English borrowed "disapeeren" from French, built from the prefix "dis-", meaning "apart" or "away," and the verb "appear." The sense was literal: to cease to be seen, to vanish from view, which is still the core of the word today. The verb replaced an older native English word, "fordwīnan," which meant something like "to waste away" or "to dwindle." Another Old English verb, "cwincan," which meant to fade or perish, was displaced too, but its causative form survives in "quench," as in putting out a fire, a sense that makes a fading flame into a deliberate act.
