Etymology: "Dietarily" is a plain formation: the adjective "dietary" with the adverbial suffix "-ly" added to it, giving a sense of "in a way that relates to diet." The adjective "dietary" is itself built on "diet," which passed into English from Old French "diete" and ultimately from Latin "diaeta," a borrowing of Greek "diaita," meaning a way of life or mode of living. The older Greek sense was broad, covering how a person lived in general, not only what they ate, and the narrower sense of food intake developed later in English. Because "dietarily" is simply "dietary" plus "-ly," its meaning follows directly from the adjective: it describes something considered with respect to diet, such as a rule, restriction or recommendation applied to eating. It is a rare word, mostly found in technical or medical writing where a single adverb is more concise than a longer phrase like "with regard to diet."
