Diaita

Part of speech: noun

Definitions

  1. A method of living that emphasizes health and wellness practices, particularly diet and nutrition
  2. A prescribed regimen that outlines specific lifestyle choices for maintaining or improving health
  3. An organized approach to daily life that often includes dietary restrictions or guidelines aimed at enhancing physical well-being

Etymology: In ancient Greek medical writing, "diaita" meant an entire way of living rather than a food plan. Hippocratic authors used it for the whole regimen of a healthy life: what you ate and drank, but also exercise, sleep, bathing and daily habits. The narrowing to food came later, and English "diet" preserves the older breadth only in the sense of a whole mode of living. The English word came through Latin "dieta" and Old French "diete," and it appears in Middle English around 1300, still carrying the sense of a regimen of living. The Latin form was also used for the German imperial assemblies, as in the Diet of Worms, but that "diet" is a different word, from medieval Latin "dieta," meaning a day's work or a day's appointed session, and it only looks like the food word by coincidence.
