Etymology: "Developments" is simply the plural of "development", so the story is that of the singular noun. It descends from Old French "desvelopemens", meaning "unrolling", and the French form "développement" came from it. The English word traces back to the idea of unwrapping something folded, as a scroll or a parcel is opened out. The word was first recorded in English in 1756. Its path from "unrolling" to "growth" happened gradually: once a thing is unfolded, its hidden contents and later stages become visible, so the sense moved from the physical act of opening up to the process of something gradually taking shape. The plural form carries this sense of separate events or stages, as in news of "developments" in a situation.
