Etymology: Before it described cleaning a wound or a dirty surface, "deterge" was a Latin act of wiping something away. The Latin verb "detergere" combines "de-", meaning "off" or "away", with "tergere", "to wipe or rub". Each part describes the physical motion: a cloth dragged across a surface until the dirt comes off. The same root produced an unexpected English relative. "Tersus", the past participle of "tergere", meant "wiped clean" and then "polished", and English "terse" once described something smooth and burnished before it came to describe speech stripped of unnecessary words. The polishing sense has faded, but the idea of clearing away the superfluous remains. "Detergent" comes from the same root, through the present participle "detergens".
