  2. Etymology: "Desulfurs" is the third-person singular form of "desulfur", which means to strip sulfur from a substance. The verb is built from the prefix "de-", meaning "remove" or "reverse", attached to "sulfur". Its history runs back to Latin "dē", which carried the same sense of removal, and "sulfur", which passed through Anglo-Norman and Middle English before settling as the modern English spelling. The base word is the more interesting half. Latin "sulfur" (also spelled "sulpur") named the yellow element that burns with a choking smell, and English took it in through Anglo-Norman "sulfre" and Middle English "sulphur". The "ph" spelling survived in British usage, while "sulfur" became the American and modern standard form. Chemists adopted the "de-" compound to describe processes that remove this element, such as the treatment of fuels and metals to lower their sulfur content.
