Etymology: Sulfur has a long pedigree in English, but its prefix is the more recent addition. The word "desulfur" is built from the Latin prefix "de-", meaning "away from" or "down from," attached to "sulfur." That prefix carries a reversing or removing sense, so the verb means, quite literally, to take the sulfur out of something. The "-ing" ending simply turns the verb into the noun for the process, which is why the term now names an industrial activity as much as an action. Sulfur itself came into English through Anglo-Norman "sulfre" and Middle English "sulphur," traced back through Latin "sulfur" and "sulpur." The spelling "sulphur" survives in British usage, while "sulfur" is the form favoured in American English, and the compound inherits whichever spelling a writer prefers.
